There are four ferry services that operate return journeys to Orkney, all of which sail from different locations.

North Link Ferries operate two roll on roll off services, one from Aberdeen and one from Scrabster (near Thurso).

From Scrabster

Northlink Ferries Hamnavoe to Orkney Islands

The MV Hamnavoe sails from Scrabster to Stromness all year round and operates a daily car and passenger service. The vessel is custom built and is capable of carrying up to 600 passengers plus cars and freight.

From Aberdeen / Lerwick

Northlink Ferries Hamnavoe to Orkney Islands

The MV Hrossey is a 125m ship which sails from Aberdeen and Lerwick (Shetland) to Kirkwall, it is also custom built and is also capable of carrying up to 600 passengers cars and freight.

Bookings should be made in advance for all North Link sailings and cars should be ready for boarding 2 hours in advance of sailing. All passengers must also provide photo identification before boarding the vessel in the form of driving licence, passport, or other form of recognised photographic ID.

From Gill's Bay

Pentland Ferries to Orkney Islands

Pentland Ferries operates from Gill's Bay near John O' Groats to St Margaret's Hope in South Ronaldsay. The Pentalina B can carry 250 passengers 9 articulated lorries and more than 30 cars and the crossing takes 1 hour. There are 3 sailings daily during the summer months.

From John O' Groats

John O Groats to Orkney Islands

The MV Pentland Venture operates from John O' Groats to Burwick in South Ronaldsay during the summer months (May to September), 7 days a week. It is a passenger only service and accommodates 250 passengers taking 45 minutes sailing time. No advance bookings are necessary.
